Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi, popularly known as Biki Oberoi was born to an affluent businessman and the founder of Oberoi group of hotels – Rai Bahadur M.S. Oberoi.
Owing to his excellent business acumen and great leadership skills, Oberoi hotels are counted among the most sought after hotels in the luxury segment. Prior to which, Oberoi hotels was just a domestic name.
Biki Oberoi had gathered a sound knowledge of running a hotel business from his father, who was a hotelier. After completing his initial education, Biki Oberoi went to UK to gather knowledge in the finance domain, which would help him in business. But Biki Oberoi’s passion couldn't be confined to just the classrooms learnings. He wanted to have a first hand experience of the finest hotels of the world and the basics behind their success. So Bikki Oberoi left for a long trip, travelling around the
world and experiencing new places and their best hotels. He gave attention to each and every detail, from sumptuous food to awesome service that made these hotels the best in the world. He experienced the luxuries as a customer so that he could successfully implement it.
When he came back to India, he came back with the clarity in thoughts to put Oberoi hotels on the world map of hospitality. He consolidated all his experiences that he gathered from extensive travel and took Indian luxury hospitality industry to newer heights.
In the early 80s, Biki Oberoi’s father shared his wish of establishing the best hotel in the world. Biki Oberoi fulfilled this dream by building a luxury hotel The Oberoi Rajvillas in Jaipur. The world took notice of it and within a year of its opening in 1998, this new hotel was ranked among the best in the world. Oberoi followed up Rajvilas with similar iconic properties in Agra, Udaipur and Ranthambore (Amarvilas, Udaivilas and Vanyavilas respectively). They are a perfect amalgamation of the look and feel of ageless palaces and the modern facilities & the service top-notch.
Biki Oberoi knows the fine details of various business aspects and is adept in handling delicate situations in several instances. He can talk to a carpet-maker on the nuances of the craft with the same conviction as he can discuss a sophisticated design with an architect.
Bikki Oberoi has made a huge contribution to the hospitality industry, which has made India one of the best in the luxury hotel business in the world. Throughout his career, Oberoi has remained focussed and avoided the temptation of expanding aggressively and diversifying into budget segments unlike competitors. The man who put India never thought of quantity. Oberoi's motto for the group is "We don't want to be the biggest, we want to be the best"
In 2008, the Government of India awarded Oberoi with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, in recognition of his exceptional service to the country. He served as a Director of Jet Airways (India) Limited since March 29, 2004. In 2010, he was recognised as the “Corporate Hotelier of the World” by Hotels magazine.
