William Shakespeare once said, "It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves." Narayana Murthy is a true and blazing embodiment of this thought as he is one of the pioneers who not only built a bellwether like Infosys but held the Indian IT outsourcing industry dream from almost nothing in the 90s to 140 billion dollar industry today. Yet, he is known equally for his humility and down-to-earth attitude and for his contribution to the Indian business ecosystem and IT industry as a whole.
Narayana Murthy was born on 20th August, 1946 in Mysuru, Karnataka and not with a silver spoon. He came from a poor but educated family. After earning the Master’s degree from IIT, Kanpur, he started his entrepreneurial journey with a company called Softronics which failed after 1.5 years of its inception.
Despite the failure, he did not give up on his dream of becoming an entrepreneur. In 1981, a new chapter began in his life when he started a company called Infosys.
From thereon it has gone up to become and remain the second largest IT company of India and one of the most respected companies in the world. From 1981 to 2002, he served as the CEO of the company. Under his leadership, Infosys grew by leaps and bounds to employ more than 2 lakhs people and has been instrumental in establishing Bangalore as the IT hub of the world.
The highly coveted Global Delivery Model for IT outsourcing which has been replicated by most IT companies and studied and appreciated in renowned B-schools in the world, was first designed and implemented by this genius. All the buzz words in the IT industry like off shoring, near-shoring, no-shoring derives inspiration from this model and has become the backbone of the Indian IT industry.
True to his words on humility and grace in one’s moments of power, Narayana Murthy has always believed and followed Corporate Governance and Financial Disclosure practices beyond statutory requirements because he truly believed that it is the shareholders who are the true owners of the company. Today, Narayana Murthy is listed as one of the greatest entrepreneurs of all time, alongside Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.
In 2000, he was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India for his significant contribution to the country’s IT sector and economy. In 2008, he was awarded Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award.
He has silently moved away from the limelight by handing over the reign of the company to professionals but leaving behind a legacy which will stay long after he is gone. This is a story worth inspiring generations.
